Triangle of Sadness – I found out about this movie while scrolling my Instagram feed. The short advertising video was so interesting that I decided to watch the movie immediately.
I hadn’t googled it before watching, therefore I had no idea how great it would be. I didn’t know it had already won Palme d’Or this year, which is the highest prize awarded at the Cannes Film Festival. (Impressive, ha?)
Another misconception I had about the movie was that I believed it was made by Hollywood. The reason why I thought so could be the Hollywood star, Woody Harrelson. He is a part of the cast.
After the first 5 minutes of the movie, I realized, it was an European film. Don’t know exactly why, but European movies feel different. (I don’t claim they’re better, but definitely different.) Dialogues, shot angles, rhythm, character, and even the color of the picture is different when movie is made in Europe.
I promised that there aren’t any spoilers in this article, but “not made in Hollywood” could be a good clue for you. It means that the movie isn’t made according to the famous formula, which is used in most Hollywood movies and TV shows.

Mentioning the casting director above wasn’t just a random choice. The huge importance of her work must be acknowledged and highlighted because the biggest reason for Triangle of Sadness’s success is its’ amazing cast.
The actors and actresses did a great job. They literally killed it. Each of them, every actor and every actress, brought to the table an outstanding and astonishing performance.
Triangle of Sadness – Why is it the best movie of the year?
First and foremost every scene of the movie is interesting, beautiful, and meaningful. The story is full of important messages, cynicism, drama, and amazing humor.

And yes, the movie has million funny details, but the most astonishing part of the screenplay is how it reveals people and their inner beats. In the first part of the movie, the writer introduces characters so vividly that as a part of the audience you believe that you know them very well. The plot twist is when the story demonstrates its hero’s transformation from people with stupid problems to animals eager to survive.
The story makes you think about human beings and their unlimited ability to degrade, be selfish, sociopathic, and cruel.
Last, but not least
There’s no doubt, Ruben Östlund is a genius. Only a genius can write and direct movies like this. I hope he is going to continue creating masterpieces like this one.
It’s so hard to talk a lot about the movie without spoilers, so I’ll make a long story short and say that I’d give it 10 stars out of 10.
